Read a book day

On September 6th, National Read a Book Day is celebrated in many countries. The celebration has its roots in Europe. The original intention was to promote reading for pleasure, but it has now evolved into a day that encourages people to read in their own language and in other languages. It also encourages people to read books from all genres, not just children’s literature or romance novels.

In Europe, this day was initiated by the European Council of Ministers as «Europe Day» on May 9th 1954 and then renamed as «European Day of Languages» on November 16th 1992. In many countries, this day is celebrated by reading books and promoting literacy.
