International Day of Democracy

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the International Day of Democracy on September 15th, 2011. The day was created to promote democracy and highlight its importance as a foundation for peace, stability and development.

The International Day of Democracy (IDD) is celebrated on September 15th every year. This day is an opportunity for the world to unite in support of democracy and its fundamental principles, freedoms and values. In honour of the International Day of Democracy, the UN will highlight what they have been doing to strengthen democratic resilience and protect democratic values. The IDD is not a national holiday; UN member states observe it at their discretion.
