Having not enough time for learning?

Not having enough time to learn is an often-used excuse related to learning a second language. But honestly, that’s a flimsy excuse. Of course, it takes time to attend a language course, and it can occasionally happen that we have a busy time and limited free time. It’s ok to use this time for other tasks. But how much time do we spend doing nothing?

  • Why do we not listen to a podcast instead of the radio while driving to work?
  • Why not use a flashcard app to learn vocabulary while we’re on the toilet?
  • Why not try cooking something according to a recipe in the language you’re learning?
  • Why not watch a movie in your learning language with subtitles?

Language learning is more than learning vocabulary

Learning a language is often connected with learning vocabulary and grammar. But in reality, it is about much more. Of course, technically, it will work, but one crucial part still needs to be included.

It is probably much easier to learn a language with knowledge of the culture of the language or if you have the curiosity to look a little deeper into its background. This also leads to a deeper understanding of each other. Why is someone saying, «Can you open the light» instead of «Can you turn on the light»?

I have always wondered why Filipinos make this «mistake». It took me some time to discover that the Tagalog word «buksan» is used for both opening something and turning on something.

1. Advent

The current form of Advent dates back to the 7th century when Pope Gregory specified the number of Sundays from six to four. The number four illustrates the four thousand years that, according to church history, people had to wait for the Savior in paradise after the Fall.

La forme actuelle de l’Avent remonte au VIIe siècle lorsque le pape Grégoire a spécifié le nombre de dimanches de six à quatre. Le chiffre quatre illustre les quatre mille ans que, selon l’histoire de l’Église, les gens ont dû attendre le Sauveur au paradis après la Chute.

Mission Starship: uncompleted

Today was the Starship’s second launch, the world’s most giant rocket. The mission goal was clear: Recovery of the main stage with a partial orbit of the earth and splashdown of the Starship near Hawaii. Even though the main stage exploded after the separation from the Starship, which was demolished a few minutes later, space fans celebrated the mission as a success. Was it a success?

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin dit Molière

Molière est l’un des acteurs, metteurs en scène et dramaturges français les plus célèbres. Je ne connais pas une pièce de lui mais je connais quand même son nom. Il a célébré son premier succès en Paris et à Paris j’ai trouvé cette sculpture sur une fontaine.

Une recommandation pour tous les visiteurs de Paris : Le métro est utile pour se déplacer rapidement. Mais il te manque tellement de choses. Il est préférable de découvrir la ville à pied de temps en temps. On découvre tellement de choses et quand on a les pieds fatigués, il y a un café partout.

Le Tour Eiffel

Qui ne connait pas le Tour Eiffel ? C’est l’un des objets les plus appréciés des touristes à Paris. Il est ouvert depuis l’année 1989 mais il n’été pas toujours si populaire.

À l’origine, l’exposition devait être annulée après l’exposition universelle et de violentes protestations ont eu lieu. Plus tard, la « valeur » a été reconnue. On le voit dans d’innombrables films lorsque l’action se déroule à Paris. Ce n’est qu’en 1964 qu’elle fut inscrite à l’inventaire des monuments historiques.

Aujourd’hui, la Tour Eiffel fait partie du paysage urbain de Paris et est mondialement connue.
